Dealing with employment agencies

There are many different ways that employers find and select employees.

-Some advertise in newspapers: but not all
-Some use employment agencies to find staff, and some do not.
-Some use internet job services
-Some approach colleges and universities, seeking to employ the best graduates
-Others are approached so often by people seeking employment, that there is no need for them to actually make an effort to find employees (The employees come to them)

Employment agencies need to match employers and employees. Employment or guidance officers who work in agencies will generally have more knowledge (and contacts) in relation to some industries than others. Many employment services try to cover it all, but in reality, many of them may be better finding work in one industry rather than another.

You need to discover the capability of the agency and individual agent you use.
If they don’t understand you or your industry well, then they are unlikely to be able to place you in a job.

Don’t hesitate to request a different careers officer, or to seek out a different careers service if you are dealing with the wrong person.

Take the time to build a relationship with the agent you deal with.
Always present yourself well, and make an effort to ensure they have an accurate understanding of your knowledge, skills and aspirations for a job. You do not want to be placed into interviews for positions that do not suit you.
Once you are sure that you have found the right agency, show loyalty and enthusiasm for that agency and the staff you deal with. Remember everyone likes a positive person; and everyone likes a compliment.
