Biology courses

ANATOMY II (HUMAN) BSC112

Learn about the structure of the Anatomy of the human body, through home studies.

  • An in depth foundation course 1st year college or university level
  • For anyone working in health, fitness, sport, health or wellness industries who wants to go beyond the basics that might be covered in introductory courses such as a fitness leader certificate or health assistant certificate.
  • Through a heightened understanding of anatomy, you understand the body in greater depth and improve your capacity to work in any of these industries.

Human anatomy is the study of structure and its relation to function in the human body. Topics covered include surface, regional, systemic, and radiographic anatomy, plus cytology. This course assumes a basic understanding of anatomy, and is an ideal follow on from Human Anatomy and Physiology BSC101.

BOTANY I - PLANT PHYSIOLOGY AND TAXONOMY BSC104

Home Studies -Botany

Why Study Plants?

This 100 hour correspondence course is primarily an introduction to plant physiology and taxonomy, with some general botany including morphology and anatomy. It satisfies the learning criteria of the Royal Horticulture Society’s Module B of the Advanced Certificate in Horticulture. (For more information on the RHS qualifications, contact the school).

A knowledge of botany is important in many careers, and taking this course could be the first step to enhance career opportunities in anything from horticulture and environmental management to teaching and science.

BOTANY II - APPLIED PLANT PHYSIOLOGY BSC204

Understand the principles and practices of plant physiology and their practical applications.

This course is concerned with the structure of plants and the way in which structures develop throughout a plants life from one stage of growth to the next. These stages include juvenility, maturity, flowering and seeding. Plant development involves differentiation of the plant into specialised parts. This may include visible changes such as the structural organisation of the plant and new patterns of growth as well as less visible changes such as localised biochemical and metabolic activity.

CELL BIOLOGY BSC110

Working or wanting to work in Applied Biology?

An understanding of cell biology is important in many areas of study, for the cell is the building block of all living forms.

Student Comment: "the course was better than I expected" "I am studying a Bachelor of Health Science next year at university. I gained far more knowledge from this course than I expected." J.McEwan

HUMAN BIOLOGY 1A (ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY) BSC101

Study Human Biology

This course is designed for people working or looking to work in the health care, alternative health and fitness industries, or for people who want to gain a basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. This course enhances your capacity for work in a whole range of jobs, from fitness instructor to medical receptionist; providing a foundation and credit toward a range of certificate and higher qualifications that can lead into careers in natural therapies, medicine, teaching, research, fitness and food science; to mention only some of the possibilities.

HUMAN BIOLOGY IB (BIOENERGETICS) BSC201

Biology School: Alternative Education through Home Studies

Want to understand how the human body captures, stores and uses energy?

This applied biology course has very practical application for not only sportsmen and women, coaches and fitness leaders; but anyone who is concerned about managing and improving the work output of a human body.

Prerequisites: A basic understanding of body systems (e.g. Human Biology IA).

HUMAN BIOLOGY II BSC202 (MUSCLES & MOVEMENT)

Develop an in depth knowledge of human movement.

By understanding of the operation of muscles and nerves, in movements and reactions observed in the body. This course covers: nerves, the nervous system, motor skills, structure and function of skeletal muscle, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. Prerequisites: Human Biology BSC101 or equivalent.

HUMAN BIOLOGY III BSC301 (CARDIO RESPIRATORY PERFORMANCE)

Home Studies Course to understand the heart, lungs and blood; and how these things affect health, fitness and overall wellbeing. This course may develop career and job opportunities for anyone working in:

  • Fitness
  • Life Coaching
  • Allied Health
  • Medical support

This course covers: blood, blood pressure, pulmonary ventilation, gas exchange & transport, blood flow and gas transport, cardiorespiratory control, cardiorespiratory disease, & more. Prerequisite: Human Anatomy & Physiology BSC101 or equivalent.

ORNITHOLOGY BEN102

Home Studies -Birds

For anyone with a serious interest in birds (amateur to professional).

Learn to identify and understand the habits of different birds, from water birds and parrots, to town birds and birds of prey.

The course provides a foundation in understanding how birds are classified and named scientifically; as well as their biology (anatony, physiology) and behaviour.

PHYSIOLOGY II BSC111

An advanced course on human physiology that will develop further your understanding of the principles of physiology, examining functions of the cells, tissues and systems of the human body. The course details how our bodies maintain internal equilibrium and health while exposed to the most variable range of conditions, such as physical, psychological and environmental factors.
A course designed for health therapists and all those working in health care that want or need to develop a deeper understanding of the human body processes and health maintenance.

Prerequisite: Human Anatomy & Physiology BSC101 or equivalent.

PLANT ECOLOGY BSC302

Work toward a more sustainable environment?

Who Should Study Plant Ecology?

  • Land Managers and Developers
  • Farmers
  • Landscape Architects and Planners
  • Botanists, Environmentalists, Scientists
  • Teachers Consultants, etc

Take this for professional development; or as a component of a larger course -the first step toward a new and rewarding career.

This course helps you understand the nature and principles of plant ecology and apply that understanding to the cultivation of plants.

VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY BEN104

Develop an ability to distinguish between different types of vertebrate animals on the basis of their physiological characteristics, with a particular emphasis on mammals.

A useful course for anyone wanting to work with vertebrate animals; zoo staff, pet shop staff, animal breeders, wildlife managers, farmers, scientists, farm or pet supply companies, etc.
