Work as a professional horticulturist in ornamental horticulture at management level

Examples of jobs in the management area are: garden centre manager, garden consultant, manager of grounds and grounds staff, or in technical research, teaching or writing - in fact any professional level of ornamental horticulture.

This course provides professional training for people to work in the management, care and development of gardens, parks, or other areas of amenity horticulture (e.g. Tree management, Turf management, interior plantscaping).

It is an extremely comprehensive course that is is designed to assist the graduate to gain employment in any area of ornamental horticulture.

This course provides training for people to work in the care and development of gardens, parks, or other areas of amenity horticulture (e.g. tree management, turf management, interior plant scaping), at a technician or management level, in positions such as: managers, technical officers, or consultants.

TRAINING FOR

This course is designed to assist the graduate to gain employment in the following fields: Garden Company Manager, Technical Officer, Marketing Manager, Consultant, Vocational Trainer.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no academic pre-requisites for this course but it is expected that successful

applicants have achieved an educational level that will enable the completion of the course objectives. Entry to this course is based on:

a person with 5 years industry experience;
year 12 standard of education;
mature age student.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS

a) Compulsory core modules

The following four modules are compulsory: Biochemistry (Plants), Instructional Skills, Business Studies, and Workplace Health and Safety.

b) Stream Core Modules

800 hours of study in compulsory modules (normally 8 x 100 hour modules) as follows:

Horticultural Management, Horticultural Marketing, Botany I, Horticulture I, Horticulture II, Engineering I, Soil Management, Plant Protection.

c) Stream Elective Subjects

600 hours of study in modules (normally 6 X 100 hour modules), selected from amenity or ornamental horticulture modules such as: Turf Care, Arboriculture I, Landscaping I, Landscaping II, Landscape Construction, Advanced Propagation, Irrigation, Australian Native Plants I, Herb Culture, Orchid Culture, Roses, Tropical Plants.

d) Optional Electives

200 hours of study in modules (normally 2 X 100 hour modules), which can be chosen from a large variety of options.

Students are required to attain a current Senior First Aid Certificate during the period of study.

2. WORKSHOPS

Two PBL (Problem Based Learning) modules that develop practical skills, related to real life industry needs. For more detail see Workshop I and Workshop II.

3. Industry CONFERENCES or SEMINARS

You are required to attend conferences, seminars, etc totalling 100 hrs.

4. RESEARCH PROJECTS

Two Research Project modules. Each involves a component that teaches you about research theory & skills; followed by a mini project to practice what was covered in the first part of the course. They are: Research Project I and Research Project II.

DURATION: 2,500 hours (minimum nominal duration)

RECOGNITION

This course is accredited through the International Accreditation and Recognition Council.

Being a self paced learning program, the student can study at a rate according to their ability and capabilities.

This course may be studied over 3 years or less on a full time basis, or up to 8 years on a part time basis.
