  • Some are employed for marketing firms, working as part of a team to provide marketing services to clients.
  • Media organisations (e.g. publishers) - some may be involved in design and layout of printed material, illustrations, book covers, etc. for print or electronic media.

General Roles of a Graphic Designer

Designers may be involved in team work e.g. in advertising agencies, or mainly work alone e.g. as a consultant.

Whilst actual job roles may vary across employers, and daily activities might differ in accordance with current projects, the following general roles are typically part of a graphic designer's repertoire:
  • Liaising with clients in order to discern what they require in terms of visual communications. The designer will discuss the client's needs at length and may also produce a series of rough sketches often referred to as design 'roughs' to aid in arriving at a decision.
  • Preparing detailed design layouts by employing a variety of techniques including illustrations, photographs and computer-generated images.
  • Showing and explaining the design proposals to the client for their approval.
  • Making adjustments or scrapping the proposals at the client's discretion and starting again if necessary.
  • Developing and preparing designs for signage, advertising, print or electronic publications.
  • Overseeing all stages in the production of designs. This includes arranging printing and supervising this process.
