SOIL MANAGEMENT - CROPS BHT303

Discover how soil conditions can make or break a cropping enterprise

First understand the physical and chemical nature of soils, then learn about ways you can manage the soils to optimize plant growth, whether by improving structure, changing the chemistry to make nutrients more available or choosing and using appropriate additives (e.g. fertilizers, soil conditioners etc).

This course is similar to our other soil management courses, but relates specifically to crops.

The aim of soil management is maintaining a soil environment providing optimal conditions for plant growing. The main directions of soil management are:

  • Soil water management (watering, drainage, etc);
  • Soil fertility maintenance (fertilizers etc);
  • Erosion prevention;
  • Salinity prevention;
  • Chemical control (PH etc);
  • Texture and physical structure of soil maintenance (ploughing, cultivation etc)

Over seven lessons you learn about:

  • Soil properties
  • How to simply test soil characteristics
  • Planning soil improvement programs

Methods and directions of soil management greatly depends on local conditions (climate, type of soil and land cover, land use etc). For example, drainage may be necessary if the water table is too high, salinity control is necessary in arid areas etc.
