Understanding Business

Businesses involve two or more people interacting with each other.

In the simplest form, this is the representative of a business selling something to a customer. It may be a sole trader talking to their customer on the phone. But all business involves some form of interaction. You may be thinking, but yes, what about the internet. Yes, there is not always face to face or verbal interaction today. You may sit at your computer and order a copy of the latest best seller. The order goes off to a website and someone there sits down and parcels your book and posts it to you. There is no actual physical or verbal interaction between the two of you. But there is still an interaction in that you are buying and they are selling you that book.

Customer Service and Business

  Think about a shop. Have you ever avoided a shop because you did not like the shopkeeper or did not like where it was situated or how they presented their goods? So you hardly ever went into that shop. With online stores, we do not have the physical cues to be able to judge whether we like a shop, so we use other cues – what their website looks like, what their website says about them, customer reviews or testimonials, how their service was if we ever used them, what their goods are like and so on. The internet makes use of many of the same communication skills that we possess in face to face interactions, we just use them and obtain information from them in a different way to before.

Managing these interactions between people is a key aspect of the day to day operation of any business.

In a business where more people are interacting, is a more complex business. If you have lots of staff dealing with lots of people doing small transactions, there is a higher potential for problems to arise between people.

If you have fewer staff, dealing with fewer clients and fewer suppliers; in a business that does fewer but larger transactions; there will be less potential for people problems.

The presentation of your business is very important. By that, we mean presentation can be physical (face to face), verbal (over the phone) or online (with minimal interaction). But however we present ourselves, it must be good to get and maintain customers.

Business coaching is generally considered to be a good method of intervention to improve a business or the way the business person works, as it can be:

  • time efficient
  • effective
  • is individually tailored to the person’s requirements
  • is outcome focused

In summary business coaching:

  • is a one to one service for an individual business person, aimed at improving the success of that individual or their business;
  • focuses on the important factors and helps the individual to focus on their goals and to ACT on those goals;
  • helps individuals grow their business, give support and also improve their overall life hopefully;
  • provides skills and knowledge. The business coach will also share with the business person different tools.
